Closed communal dump in Finland had installed expensive effluent water treatment system for handling the effluent water. After installation they found out extremely high iron concentrations in the water which started to precipitate without control. Concern was that precipitated iron could block totally the effluent treatment system. Provenor did following steps to solve the problem:
1. Many different systems were considered including chemical complexing, precipitation with pH change, oxidisation etc. Also other methods like blocking with ion exchange etc were considered. Wide range of literature also needed to be checked.
2. Provenor took samples and executed laboratory tests 4 times with different methods (tests in the laboratory of the University of Lappeenranta, analyses were done at LUT).
3. After evaluation oxidisation with peroxide was chosen since it is effective, fairly easy and economical. Final results showed peroxide is very effective in oxidising iron from the water. With low investments customer can treat the problem effectively and with low variable costs.
Due to the nature of the issue and large area with no present treating method it took 5 full working days to get the final solution.
